King’s Daughter: Episode 42 – Myeong Nong and Seolnan’s sensual love scene (Updated)

The tattoo engraving scene in episode 42 of “King’s Daughter” is the most beautiful love scene I have been priveleged to watch.
The scene is so sensual, disturbing, provocative and innocent all at the same time, that even if Myeong Nong (Jo Hyun Jae) and Seolnan (Seo Hyun Jin) did not exchange any kiss it still managed to take my breath away.  I was literally holding my breath from beginning to end of this scene.  When Myeong Nong touched Seolnan’s shoulder, I tell you, I could feel my heart jump.  It is as if Myeong Nong is already branding Seolnan, staking his claim on her body.  It was so primitive and disturbing but oh so beautiful.
I have watched this scene so many times since last night, but the emotions are the same every time I watch it.  What a perfect love scene.  I have never been so moved by a love scene as much as this one did.
Our Jo Hyun Jae and Seo Hyun Jin gave  a great performance.  They are beautiful together – our Hyun Jae is so manly, while Seo Hyun Jin is so petite and feminine. They are luminous in this scene!
A Chinese fan translated the dialogue for this scene from Chinese to English.  Sharing it here with everyone:
Crown Prince tells Seolnan that it is his first time to engrave a tattoo, so it maybe a bit painful.
Crown Prince asks Seolnan where she wants the tattoo to be engraved. Seolnan first thought to have the tapir tattoo placed over her Soo Baek Hyang tattoo, but she hesitates as she recalls Dorim’s words not to show it to anyone.
Then Crown Prince becomes annoyed at being made to wait long and rudely tells Seolnan that he would consider Seolnan as a man even if she is nude in front of him.  OUCH!
Then Crown Prince begins to engrave the tattoo on Seolnan.
While making the engraving, Crown Prince tells Seolnan that whoever engraves the tattoo for a Bi Moon becomes the master/owner of that Bi Moon.  Crown Prince adds that even though he knows that Seolnan is not loyal to him, Crown Prince is still Seolnan’s master/owner.
Seolnan replies that she has loyalty to him.
Crown Prince replied that she is looking for her sister and nothing else on her mind.  Then Crown Prince tells Seolnan that her first mission is to become Soo Baek Hyang and serve the King as a Princess.
Seolnan said Dorim had told her something about SBH and also said that she can see SBH in Seolnan.
Here are some screencaps from this beautifully-executed love scene between Myeong Nong and Seolnan.

  1. nice. i loved this scene too. by the way, where can i find english translations of episode 40 – 42. i can’t wait for the english subbed ones. thanks.

  2. Episode 42 is a piece of artwork in TV production that is seldom found in Korean dramas: the way the princess is presented to both the Crown Prince and at the end to the King is done very well which highlighted the transformation of Seolnan is now complete.
Tattoo is a symbol of intimacy and with that screen shot showing the blood and skin being exposed is very remarkable, on top of the gentle touch by the Crown Prince on her shoulder.
Not sure if it is true but someone says on the Baidu discussion group that the opening line delivered by the Crown Prince in the scene is very suggestive, something like ‘Cause this is first time, not sure what will happen… should be quite painful…’

  3. I already expressed myself about this scene on soompi but seeing how everyone felt the same make me so happy ! And I’m glad to not being alone to watch and re-watch this scene !!! Like i already said, this scene is a masterpiece ! SN and MN definitely are sparkling ! (i hope that they will get some awards ! Moreover, i hope that the quality of their future love scenes (not sex scenes, i said “love”) will be the same. I hope that this is not a paramount but just a norm installed for the next’s ones to come.

  4. Why does she need the tattoo when she already has the real Su Baek Kyang flower birthmark on her left shoulder? Why doesn’t she tell them about it? Just curious…

Also except for her evil half-sister, who else knows the truth and can dispose it since SN doesn’ t even know it and even if she does, she probably won’t tell anyone for fear of harming her beloved sister.

How come the King and the advisor don’t think of checking the birthmark on the fake princess to prove she is the real King’s daughter?

    • JJ, to answer your questions:

      1. the tapir tattoo, the one which Myeong Nong engraved on Seolnan, is placed on the body of everyone who becomes a member of Bi Moon.
      2. the flower is not a birthmark, but a tattoo engraved there by Chae Hwa to identify Seolnan as the real Soo Baek Hyang in case Chae Hwa dies.
      3. Dorim told Seolnan not to mention the flower tattoo to anyone for the moment. Maybe because it is not the right time yet, Seolnan could be in danger if the information is released untimely.
      4. The King and advisor did not check the Seolhee’s back because, like I said the flower is not a birthmark, but a tattoo placed on Seolnan’s back by Chae Hwa.

      • Thank you so much.
Now I can understand some reason behind the story. This drama does raise quite many questions for me.

  5. There seems to be a lot of mystery in this drama at this moment is confusing to me. I feel each episode is too short and the story is building up real slowly.

  6. why aren’t ep 40-42 be subbed yet?hik…………………hik…………………..hik…………………….

  7. Hi! Somehow I can’t stop thinking that CP holds SN always way too tight. In this episode it left a red mark on her shoulder, in the next episode it is shown that he holds her hand in such a way, that their fingers go white and red.

    • in this episode CP had to hold SN’s shoulder tight because he is engraving on her skin. Quite painful, she might flinch, might mess up the tattoo.

in the next ep, it is cold, he holds her hand tightly to transfer heat from his hand to hers.

But I like that he holds her tight, maybe sign that he is very possessive of her already. hehehehe

      • yeah, did you also notice the handmark he left on her skin after he took his hand? I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it! 😛

  8. I bet everybody has watched and rewatched this scene a thousand times! It is made with real emotions…I wouldn’t be surprised if some feelings were to begin to grow between the actors… The way SHE looks at him in the scene where he holds her hand….And the way HE looks at her, especially when she is dancing (see ep 44 raw in here)…man, you just can’t fake that look! or can you?

    • If they are not falling in love for reals, then that means they are truly good actors for making us believe that they are in love.

JHJ has said in some of his interviews that he always falls in love with his leading ladies during the filming. I guess it is part of immersing himself in the role. How can he act in love with someone, if he doesn’t feel it inside somehow. But, so far, those feelings have always been confined within the drama. After filming is over…. back to reality.

  9. JHJ has the most expressive eyes, that’s maybe one reason we can feel that he’s really in love with his leading lady.
One can always feel the real emotions when he acted. I believe you Prissymom, it’s like him putting himself to what the script has required him in the role. He’s really the best actor.

  10. OMG the sensual scene! Whoa!!!!! Really reminded me of Tom Cruise and Koyuki from “The Last Samurai” scene when she was dressing him up as a Japanese man. Wow… I’m sure you’re laughing at me now because I jsut saw the same scene 4 times!!!

    • I watched it more than 4 times the first time they aired that scene, so how can I laugh at you? 😀 It is such a beautiful and evocative scene even though no kisses were exchanged.
